Susanna was born in Virginia to a military family. Her family moved to Fayetteville in 1982. She graduated from Douglas Byrd High School and married her high school sweetheart in 1994. Prior to joining the Village Baptist Church staff in December 2007, she worked in the legal profession for 13 years.

Susanna and her husband, Gary, have a son and a daughter.
